Committees of the Church
Each January, a third of the members of each of the thirteen standing church committees rotate off (after serving a 3-year term.) One of the tasks assigned to the Nominations and Lay Leadership Committee is to secure new members for committees. If you would be willing to serve on a committee, contact David Jennings.
Standing Committee Descriptions
- Children’s Committee: supports the work of the Minister to Children and assists in planning activities and events for children and their families
- Church Visitation Committee: identifies, with church staff assistance, church members who are no longer able to attend church and establishes and maintains contact with them through visits, phone calls, and cards
- Congregational Life Committee: coordinates activities and food for social functions, coordinates church bulletin boards, church directories, and oversees the Bereavement Sub-Committee and Health and Wellness Sub-Committee
- Heritage Committee: maintains the Betty (Beeka) Wise Coleman Heritage Room and adds historically significant items as appropriate; collects and organizes historically significant information relevant to the church and its history
- Nominations and Lay Leadership: Nominates persons to fill vacant positions for the Church committees and nominates 12 prospective members to fill yearly vacancies on the Diaconate; nominates persons to fill partial term vacancies, as needed
- Missions Committee (Global and Local Missions Committee): provides leadership in community and worldwide missions activities, the Helpinghands Program, and serves as laison with missions groups of the church
- Outreach and Membership: contacts visitors and plans visitor/new member breakfast and luncheon each year; coordinates greeters at church entrances prior to the Sunday School hour; promotes a warm introduction to the life of our church family
- Personnel Committee: addresses matters related to church ministerial and support staff, job descriptions, compensation and benefits recommendations, job performance evaluations, and maintains Policies and Proceedures Manual for all staff
- Property Committee: oversees and maintains the church building and grounds (except the Edgewood Cemetary and Mausoleum), develops and maintains maintenance policies, oversees new construction projects, oversees church insurance policies, and assists with management of church maintenance staff
- Spiritual Discernment Formation Committee: plans events and coordinates activities related to the spiritual formation and growth of church members; promotes the development of the spirtual gifts of church members
- Stewardship Committee: oversees the church’s finances and audits, administers gifts to the church according to the Memorial Funds and Gifts Policy in the FBC Policy Procedures Manual, reviews the monthly financial report submitted by the churck treasurer and financial secretary and makes recommendations as appropriate, oversees special spending requests
- Worship Committee: maintains the chancel (including decorations, flowers, candles, antependia, acolytes, etc.)
- Youth Committee: assists the staff, particularly the Associate Pastor/Minister to Students, in planning and carrying out educations, missions-oriented, and recreational activities and events for youth and their families
Ad hoc Committees
The church is also served by several ad hoc committees from time to time. Currently, there are no Ad hoc committees in use.
